Gobble Gobble Hey!

A Thanksgiving joke from '90s Dallas that turned into a decades-long text tradition. Now it's a punk rock turkey day shirt.

How It Started

Sometime in the early nineties, back when Dallas nights meant Deep Ellum, Club Clearview, July Alley or maybe Lower Greenville, I started a dumb little Thanksgiving habit.

For a few of those years, Thanksgiving morning also meant the annual Mystery Van vs. Mini Van football game.

On one side was the Mystery Van’s: my twenty-something friends. Hungover, at the park, with a full bar of mimosas and Bloody Marys on the sideline.

On the other side was the Mini Vans: my brother and his friends, with families, kids and a little more sleep.

Then everybody split up and headed off to their own family Thanksgivings.

Instead of "Happy Thanksgiving," I'd say "Gobble Gobble Hey."

That's it. That was the whole joke.

The Thanksgiving Morning Text

Years later, when the friend group ran on a text chain, where the party plans came together.. which shows were coming up, what happy hour we were meeting at etc…..

And every year, Thanksgiving morning I'd send the same message:

In the immortal words of Joey Ramone: "Gobble Gobble Hey!!!!"

Every single year. Different friend groups, same text. For decades.

It Came Back Around

Eventually it drifted away, the way these things do, we grew up and people got busy.

Then I noticed something. Every Thanksgiving morning, my phone would light up. one or two of my friends were sending it to me now.

"Gobble Gobble Hey!!"

Punk Rock Turkey Day

So here's a shirt to commemorate it. A punk rock turkey band, a Thanksgiving morning text, and every crew that ever got one.
